Donald Eugene Braithwaite of Hagerstown went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 21, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born April 12, 1934, on his grandparents’ farm outside Rapid City, S.D., he was the son of the late William and Katherine (Greenlee) Braithwaite.

In his early years, Don lived on the ranch, which at that time was one of the largest ranches in South Dakota.

He attended Rapid City High School and graduated from Plain View Academy in Red Field, S.D.

He spent most of his adult life in the western states, primarily in Santa Fe, N.M., and Amarillo, Texas. He worked for several years as a cowboy, loved horses and was an expert marksman with a rifle and pistol. Later he was the manager of Brotherhood Rehabilitation Center, a residential facility for troubled youth in Dallas, Texas. He was a master chef and was employed at several large restaurants and supper clubs in the Santa Fe area. After moving to Hagerstown, he worked at St John’s Prospect Hall in Frederick, Md., as well as at St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown.

He was a devout Christian.

Don loved children and dogs, and was well-known for his friendliness. Don truly “never met a stranger.”

His “trademark” was his cowboy hat and boots, and he was rarely seen without them.

Don enjoyed telling stories about his childhood in the West. He especially enjoyed sharing family stories about his grandfather’s adventures in what was then known as “Indian country” when he drove a mule team hauling freight between Deadwood and Pierre, S.D., during the Black Hills Gold Rush in the 1870s.

Don was deeply loved and will be sadly missed.

Don is survived by his wife, Ruby (Toms) Braithwaite; stepchildren, Sheila Boyer and husband, Larry, Kathy Parkinson and husband, David, Wayne Smith and wife, Cheryl, Emily Rubeck and husband, Gerald, and Tammara Whetsell and husband, Al, all of Hagerstown. In addition, he is survived by stepgrandchildren, Gerald Rubeck Jr., Krisha Faith, Tara Gladhill, Seth Rubeck, Sterling Rubeck, Skylar Whetsell and Braelynn Whetsell; stepgreat-grandchild, Aiden Butler; and his dog, Muffin. In addition, he is survived by numerous cousins in the western states and a special aunt, Trevor Braithwaite, in Saskatchewan, Canada.

He was predeceased by a stepchild, Sharon Smith, in 2006.

Services will be Wednesday June 26, 2013, at 10 a.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md., with Pastor Matt Walker officiating. Burial will be in Brown’s Cemetery, Foxville, Md.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
