9-10 Baseball: Conococheague stops Federal in 5 innings

Conococheague scored in every inning on Friday night as it beat Federal 13-3 in the first round of the Maryland District 1 9-10 Little League baseball tournament.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

“It was a team game,” Conococheague manager Mike Kelbaugh said. “Everybody contributed and played good. We hit the ball well. If you build leads that big on this level, you have a little room to play around. We put the bat on the ball, we bunted and we moved runners around.”

Kelbaugh said he was proud of the fine job that his two pitchers did.

“Trace Draper and Camryn Moats did a good job of throwing strikes,” Kelbaugh said. “They only gave up one walk for the whole game.”

Conococheague (1-0) will host Clear Spring on Saturday at 5 p.m., while Federal (0-1) will host a losers’ bracket game on Monday night at 6 against an opponent to be determined.

Evan Wright, Hunter Turner and Trace Draper collected three hits apiece for Conococheague. Wright also added three RBIs. Camryn Moats had two hits and two RBIs, while Camden Malloy also had two hits for Conococheague.

Tyler Remsburg led Federal with three hits.

After Federal took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Conococheague tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning when Wright slugged a solo home run to left.

Conococheague scored four runs in the second to take the lead for good at 5-1. Turner scored the first run on a passed ball. Andrew Kelbaugh came home on a single to center by Corey Jamison. Wright capped the rally with a two-run double to left.

After Federal got a run in the top of the third, Conococheague responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to build the lead to 8-2. Conococheague got the runs on a sacrifice fly to right by Kelbaugh and a two-run single to center by Moats.

After Federal got another run in the top of the fourth, Conococheague answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a fielding error to extend its lead to 10-3.

Conococheague finished off Federal by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Wright led off the fifth with a double to left and took third when Draper singled to left. Draper went to second on the same play on the throw to third base. Trenton Marker singled to right to bring home Wright and send Draper to third. Draper scored and Marker moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Malloy. Turner then doubled to center to drive in Marker with the game-ending run.
