Renda powers Suns past Drive

June 21, 2013

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Tony Renda hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and a two-run double in the seventh as the Hagerstown Suns piled up a bunch of runs against the Greenville Drive for the second straight night with a 13-9 victory Friday.

It was the fifth consecutive win for the Suns (40-29, 2-0) and their second straight to start the second half of the South Atlantic League season. They beat the Drive 14-1 on Thursday.

The Suns, the Northern Division’s first-half champions, broke a 5-5 tie Friday in the top of the fifth inning, rallying for five runs for a 10-5 lead. The big blow was Renda’s three-run shot to left — his second homer of the season.

The Suns added three runs in the seventh on Renda’s two-run double and an RBI single by Brandon Miller for a 13-5 advantage.

Hagerstown then held on as Greenville (22-49, 0-2) answered with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Khayyan Norfork had three of the Suns’ 13 hits and scored three runs, while Matt Foat added two hits and three runs in the victory.

Travis Henke (3-1), the second of six Hagerstown pitchers used on the night, threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win.
