Suns open 2nd half with a bang

GREENVILLE, S.C. — After wrapping up the first-half title in the South Atlantic League Northern Division on Sunday, the Hagerstown Suns opened the second half of the season Thursday night with a 14-1 rout of the Greenville Drive.

Matt Foat had three of Hagerstown’s 13 hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBIs, while Shawn Pleffner and Narciso Mesa each had two hits and two RBIs, Estarlin Martinez hit a three-run homer and Stephen Perez and Craig Manuel added two RBIs apiece.

The Suns (39-29, 1-0) scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead. The rally was highlighted by Martinez’s first home run of the year — a three-run shot to left off Driver starter Luis Diaz (1-4).

Hagerstown scored four more runs in the fifth to go up, 12-1. Foat, Manuel and Mesa hit consecutive one-out doubles to get the rally started.

The Suns added their final two runs in the eighth on a two-out, two-run double by Foat.

Hagerstown starter Brett Mooneyham (3-1) went five innings for the win, allowing one run, three hits and three walks while striking out four. Ian Dickson followed with three scoreless innings for the Suns, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out five. Derek Self walked one and struck out two in the ninth.

Greenville (22-48, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by David Chester.
