Mail Call - June 21

June 20, 2013

“I have just finished watching a program on TV, asking for monetary donations and ... showed the fraud and misuse of all the thousands of dollars, that big salaries, large organized parties, weeks of vacations, all those things that are being spent. I had often wondered what percent of donations ever reached intended use. From now on, I will use my donation for pleasures for my family and myself. Think again, and investigate before you donate.”

“All the hype about the million dollars to the Yale Drive project, and maybe 2,000 jobs in 15 years, and it being put forth by Sen. Mikulski and Sen. Cardin, our illustrious Democrats who bring home some bacon to Washington County once in awhile, I’d like to know, however, how many thousands of dollars were given to their campaigns by local businessmen in order to make this happen. Maybe you could do us a service, Herald-Mail, with your freedom of information ability.”
— Washington County

“This is in reference to the county commissioners. I think we’d better use a heads-up. If you lower that infrastructure fee to the county government that’s going to be for apartments, come on, that’s ridiculous. And also, if this gets approved for the City of Hagerstown, to get their taxes reduced — which I agree they should have them reduced — it’s going to be passed on to the rest of the county taxpayers. And how about the other little city governments and municipalities in Washington County?”

“Just read in today’s paper that the BOE superintendent’s salary is $196,000. What in the world does he do for that kind of money? That’s more money than anybody in city, county government makes.”
— North End

“Well, finally, a decent column from Leonard Pitts, ‘Tyranny will not come calling at the point of a gun.’ He hit it right on.”
— Hagerstown

“Apparently, a lot of you people out there’s always criticizing the Republicans or the tea party, and calling them names — I’m one of those — apparently you really don’t know what tea party stands for. It’s ‘taxed enough already.’ There should be a lot of more of you out there who want to be called in the tea party movement. We are all very hardworking people, just like most people want to be.”

“Outside Mercersburg, Pa., a homeowner is displaying our American flag with the utmost disrespect. A Confederate flag is flown at the top of their flag pole, and directly underneath it is the American flag being flown upside down. Many have fought and died for that freedom to display our American flag. Do not disrespect Old Glory, stained with the blood of those who died. We do not appreciate seeing our American flag being flown is such a manner. We’re proud to be Americans and proud of our American flag. God bless the USA.”
— Mercersburg, Pa.

“Veterans beware: There are scammers calling veterans, saying that they are from the VA and they want the veteran to do a survey over the phone. Do not do it. The number is a 800 number that says IFC as the caller. I told the caller that I would rather do this survey over the Internet to confirm the call, and the (caller) immediately hung up on me. I called the VA police in Martinsburg, W.Va., and they said it is a huge scam going around, trying to get veterans’ info. They are investigating it.”
