Root whiffs 12 in Funkstown victory

MOUNT AIRY, Md. — J.T. Root had 12 strikeouts and only allowed four hits to lead Funkstown Post 211 past Mount Airy Post 191.

Brad Spickler had two hits and Colby Johnson had two RBIs for Funkstown (4-1, 1-0).



PREP BASEBALL

Team Maryland starts 2-2

NORMAN, Okla. — Team Maryland went 1-1 in each of its first two days at the Heartland Baseball Classic.

On Wednesday, Maryland opened with an 11-1 loss to Texas and then rebounded for a 5-1 victory over Arkansas.

Ryan Selmer (Riverdale Baptist) tossed a four-hitter with three strikeouts for Maryland against Arkansas.

North Hagerstown’s Andrew Yacyk had two hits, including an RBI double. Brady Acker (Atholton) hit a grand slam in a five-run first inning. Rob Metz (Poolesville) and Brady Policelli (Walkersville) each had two hits.

On Tuesday, Maryland began the tournament with a 3-2 loss when it allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

Maryland came back with a 3-0 victory over Georgia behind the performance of pitcher Taylor Stiles (DeMatha High School), who struck out a Classic-record 16 batters.

Yacyk had an RBI single for Maryland.

Team Maryland meets Ohio today at 1 and then goes against Colorado at 4.

GOLF

Bradshaw in W.Va. Open lead

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Looking for his seventh title in the event, David Bradshaw shot a 3-under-par 69 to share the first-round lead in the 80th West Virginia Open on Wednesday.

Bradshaw, of Harpers Ferry, had three birdies in his first eight holes and finished tied with Ian Patrick for the lead. Bradshaw currently is a mini-tour regular and trails only Sam Snead in West Virginia Open titles.

Four-time champion Scott Davis is one stroke behind along with Bob Friend, a perennial contender and former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher.

The Open is being played at the Parkersburg Country Club.
