Three people were taken to the hospital after a chain-reaction traffic accident Wednesday afternoon on Franklin Street near the Hagerstown Police Station.

The accident occurred at about 1:35 p.m., when a Ford Ranger struck the rear of a small Honda passenger vehicle that was stopped in traffic, according to police Sgt. Eric Knode.

The impact pushed the Honda forward, causing it to strike the back of a Mercury station wagon that also was stopped on Franklin Street, Knode said.

The drivers of the Honda and the Mercury, and a passenger in the Ford were taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown to be treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, he said.

The driver of the Ford was Dorothy Mae Decker of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Officer Casey Constable said.

Franklin Street between Burhans Boulevard and Walnut Street was closed to traffic for about an hour while workers removed the vehicles from the roadway.
