Gary Lee DeWeerd, 64, of 60 Broadway, Hagerstown, Md., lost his battle with Alzheimer's disease Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Reeders Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Md.

Born April 7, 1949, in Holland, Mich., he was the son of Donna Mae VanWiernan DeWeerd and the late Gerald Frederick DeWeerd.

He graduated from Holland High School in 1967. He received his bachelor's degree in human resources from St. Leo's College, and a master's degree in psychology from Hood College.

Capt. Gary DeWeerd retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of service.

He was an avid baseball fan, and past president of the Hagerstown Suns Fan Club. He was a former member of the Hawks Booster Club. He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

In addition to his mother, Donna, he is survived by his wife, Theresa DeWeerd; daughters, Christina Curry and Tammy DeWeerd; son, Kurtis DeWeerd; sister, Cindy Polinskey and husband, Rick, of Baldwin, Mich.; brother, Mark DeWeerd and wife, Kathy, of Holland, Mich.; Linda DeWeerd, mother of Kurtis and Tammy; granddaughters, Kaydence Custer and Morgan Misero; and many nieces and nephews, and "adopted" children.

There will be a gathering of friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
