Fashion show raises funds for trip

The For Our Kids Sake organization and the newly named Robert W. Johnson Community Center (formerly Memorial Recreation Center) want to thank the community for supporting the fashion and talent show on June 2 at the Martin Luther King Center.

The event included 14 models ranging in age from 2 through 20, and two soloists.

A big thank you goes to everyone, and the organizers look forward to the community’s continued support for other fundraisers to be held before the bus trip to the amusement park scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10.

Summer basketball league to open Sunday

The newly named Robert W. Johnson Community Center (formerly the Memorial Recreation Center) and Lee Green Basketball will host an opening day celebration Sunday for the Ruth Monroe Summer Basketball League with activities in Wheaton Park.

In addition to basketball, there will be entertainment with performances by D. Bell Production and Off the Block, and there will be food and games starting at 2 p.m.


The first game will begin at 4:15 p.m. and games will be played until 8 p.m.

Summer camp gets going Monday

The first day of summer camp in Wheaton Park will be Monday, starting at 9 a.m. 

Children are to be dropped off at Wheaton Park between 9 and 9:15 a.m.

A different theme has been planned for each week with corresponding activities, such as animal planet, science week, fear factor and will conclude with Olympic week.

There will also be a field trip to the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo in Thurmont, Md. Campers are asked to be on time so activities can take place as scheduled.

Zion Baptist Church plans vacation Bible school

Zion Baptist Church, 61 Bethel St., will hold its vacation Bible school Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The theme is “Jesus Family Reunion, The Remix.”  

Vacation Bible school set

Asbury United Methodist Church, at 155 Jonathan St., will hold its vacation Bible school Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The school is for those ages 4 to 12.

Breakfast, a snack and lunch will be provided.

Families can register Monday.

Prophetic conference to be held July 19-20

The Wellspring of Life Family Worship Center will host a prophetic conference July 19 and 20, at the Clarion Hotel Learning Center (E Entrance), 901 Dual Highway, Hagerstown.

On Friday, July 19, the praise and worship gathering will begin at 6:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday, July 20, with workshops that begin at 8 a.m.

There will be several workshops offered from which to choose.  

The guest speakers and workshop instructors will be Pastor Theresa Hausley, Prophetess Karen Robinson and Prophetess Ruth Pressley.

The conference is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.

Vacation Bible school

Emmanuel United Methodist Church, at 802 Summit Ave. in Hagerstown, will host its vacation Bible school Monday through Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with a light meal at 5 p.m. for attendees and volunteers.

Classes are available for those ages 4 to adult.

This year’s theme is “Everywhere Fun Fair: Where God’s World Comes Together.”

A night for fathers

To help celebrate Father’s Day, a “Night Out” is being planned at the VFW, 70 E. Washington St., hosted by djSupadupa and his Special Ladies.

Tickets cost $10 and the doors will open at 8 p.m. with free draft beer while it lasts.

The celebration will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

A special happy Father’s Day to my Uncle (Reginald Keyes) who I call “Godfather” for always making me feel special and loved.  Love you much.
