Mail Call - June 12

June 12, 2013

“Instead of the city and the county wasting money on studies and seeing where we can put a new stadium, why don’t they use that money to improve the roads and the streets? They are in terrible shape. It’s a wonder everyone doesn’t have broken cars, from bumping through the streets and the county roads.”

— Hagerstown

“Using the IRS to punish your political enemies is a criminal act. It’s time to hold President Obama responsible.”

— Chambersburg, Pa.

“As a person who drives all over Washington County for my job, I would like to weigh in on the speed camera issue. No. 1, read the bright yellow warning signs that say ‘Photo enforced.’ No. 2, read the speed limit signs. No. 3, get off your cellphone and quit yapping and texting, so you are aware of your surroundings. And No. 4, if all else fails, enroll in a remedial reading course and retake driver’s ed. This is our society today. Nobody wants to follow directions or rules, or take responsibility for their choices.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I’m calling about the tax Mr. O’Malley put on the gas tax to ... repair the roads and all and so forth, bridges. What about the people who have ... electric cars? They don’t have any taxes on them, but they use the roads and the bridges. So what is Gov. O’Malley going to do, is he going to tax the electric, put a whole bunch of tax on the electric, to make up the difference?”

— Clear Spring

“In regards to the comment in Wednesday’s paper about the Blues Fest, about how much it costs the city of Hagerstown, what else draws that many people to the city of Hagerstown, and what does it cost the city of Hagerstown to put on the Mummers Parade? There were thousands and thousands of people who showed up for the Blues Fest, and some of them were frequenting the other restaurants downtown. So I think it’s a terrific idea that the Blues Fest is held here.”

— Washington County

“I just read Tom Wilhelm’s editorial, and I’m a Republican and it made my day, reading about what he had written, and there’s so much truth in that, and I know a lot of my Democrat friends won’t like it, but good for you, Tom. You made my day.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about the archery in the schools. In the 1960s when I went to North Hagerstown High School, we had archery in our gym class. It was a really nice sport to do. And I believe my teachers were Miss Shank and Miss Lewis. But we had archery in North High back in the ’60s.”

— Hagerstown

“The drivers running red lights at the intersection of Route 40 and Eastern Boulevard are just outrageous. It’s unbelievable. We need cameras there, to get the pictures of their license plates, and to fine them. Perhaps it’ll slow that down or shut that down. I’m also in favor of speed cameras, wherever in the county. There’s no reason ... if you break the law speeding, you should be fined.”

— Washington County

“While the Russians were warning us about the Boston bombers, our government was too busy checking the phone records of innocent Americans. Attorney General Holder should be fired immediately.”

— Hagerstown

“As a city taxpayer for almost 30 years here in Hagerstown, I’ve realized for a long time that city government is lost. The right hand doesn’t know what the left hand’s doing, and vice versa. Now, with this newer city council, I am getting some direct answers, and I am finding some solutions for some dilemmas here within the city limits. I advise my fellow taxpayers ... make these elected officials do their job.”

— Hagerstown

“I would like to make a comment on the speeding cameras. To me, there should be cameras everywhere around here, because nobody I see pays attention to the speed limit. If you can’t do the speed limit, then you shouldn’t be driving.”

— Williamsport

“I was reading Tom Firey’s diatribe about Obamacare. You know, when people get it stuck in their craw that they hate something, they just won’t look at the results of any proof against it. I mean, the fact that the people have more illness and need more medication doesn’t mean that health insurance is helping them any. Well, you know, you look at the results, and if people are sick, they need health care. And they were, and they got it.”

— South County

“As a city homeowner and taxpayer, I’m tired of being blackmailed by the Hagerstown Suns baseball stadium. It’s a fan-fading sport, and it’s a money pit forever. Either stay or leave town, but don’t ask us for more money.”

— Hagerstown

“About the IRS and President Obama: Hey, you gotta go back. Willie Nelson was one of them that the IRS tried to get him, over and over again, and there’s many others. And hey, this is what the FBI and the CIA, this is how they get information, and they go after the person if they can’t get them for something else.”

— Boonsboro

“If the media doesn’t follow up on all the President Obama scandals, including Benghazi and the IRS, then they have no more credibility than a cockroach. What ever happened to investigative journalism?”

— Chambersburg, Pa.

“This is on the fees for water and sewer and electric bills, late fees. I see where the city’s going to pass it. You know what gets me is the city council and the mayor, you people don’t take in consideration, people don’t have work, OK? For one thing ... the water and sewer bill keeps going up every year. I see in the paper where it’s going to go up 3 and 5 percent. They can’t pay their bills now, so how do you expect people to keep paying, when you keep raising?”

— Hagerstown

“Yes, I voted for President Obama, so I reckon that would qualify me as an ‘Obama supporter.’ Considering the options available and the far-out positions of the Republicans and their tea party renegades, I’m still quite sure that I made the right choice. No regrets, no remorse, thank you. If the Republicans can bring some sanity back to their party, maybe I’ll give their candidate a closer look in 2016. Until then, try to accept reality and understand that you aren’t the center of the universe.”

— Hagerstown

“I just have one question. Anybody out there can answer the question, please let me know in Mail Call. Are the speed cameras on over the summer, now that the kids are out of school? Are speed cameras still on, or do they shut them off over the summer?”
