Ipsan to give talk to Watershed group

Antietam Creek Watershed will host a guest speaker Thursday at 7 p.m. at Funkstown Town Hall. The topic is Becoming Bay Wise: Creating Healthy Sustainable Gardens. The presenter will be Annette Ipsan, horticulture educator for the University of Maryland Extension in Washington County

Attendees can learn how to improve water quality and conserve natural resources with environmentally smart gardening practices. They will also learn the best practices for planting, watering, fertilizing, mulching and mowing.

Ipsan will also discuss how to manage pests and wildlife, recycle waste and protect waterways and the Chesapeake Bay.

The event is free and open to the public.

Picnic to help woman who lost home in fire

A benefit picnic will be held Friday, June 28, starting at 6 p.m. at Dixon-Troxell Post 211 American Legion in Funkstown.

All proceeds from the picnic will be donated to Bonnie Mowen’s rebuilding fund. Mowen’s mobile home, along with all of its contents, were destroyed by fire May 27.

The picnic will be held in the pavilion and will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and all the trimmings, plus liquid refreshments. 

There will also be raffles, silent auction, and games of chance.

Spaghetti dinner set at Funkstown fire hall

The Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for those ages 5 and older. Those younger than 5 eat free.  

The menu will include spaghetti, Caesar salad, garlic bread, iced tea or coffee. Carry-out will be available.
