Washington County veterans of the Korean War, including the 42 who died during the conflict, will be honored Sunday, June 23, with the dedication of a monument to their service.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the monument site near the intersection of Mealey Parkway and Potomac Avenue in Hagerstown, said Les Bishop, commander of Korean War Veterans Association Antietam Chapter 312.

Bishop and other members of the association met with the Washington County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday to discuss the project, the main elements of which were put in place last week.

The monument consists of several stone monoliths, the central one bearing the emblem of the Antietam chapter, Bishop said. A tablet in front of that bears the names of county residents killed in action from 1950 to 1953, he said.

There will be flagpoles and benches on the site, Bishop said.

The monument is budgeted at $100,000, which includes state and county contributions, Bishop said.

“Most of it comes from business and private donations, which we’re really thankful for,” he said.

Eventually, there should be additional landscaping, as well as informational tablets at the site, Bishop said.

“It will be an historical site, as well as a monument to those who served,” he said.

Bishop was accompanied to the commissioners’ meeting by past chapter Cmdr. Jim Ensminger, Treasurer Jim Mobley and Chaplain Bud Johns.

The commissioners issued a proclamation honoring the county’s Korean War veterans. Reading from the proclamation, Commissioner Terry Baker said July 27 marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the truce ending the fighting.
