Williamsport Town Council lowers fee for businesses that offer therapeutic massage

June 11, 2013

The Williamsport Town Council Monday night voted unanimously to lower the annual fee for businesses that want to offer therapeutic massage.

Such businesses were required by the town to pay a permit fee of $1,000, but council members decided to lower that fee to $250.

Town officials talked about the fee in April after Tammy Whitney, operator of the Williamsport Barber Shop Downtown, appeared before the council to discuss a proposal to add therapeutic massage to her business.

At the time, there was support from the council for her business, and an interest in helping to get it started quickly. At the time, Mayor James G. McCleaf II said he did not like the $1,000 fee.
