WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Steven E. Pappas took a tour of Waynesboro Area Senior High School on Tuesday, just minutes after he was hired as the building’s new principal.

The school board approved hiring Pappas, of York, Pa., at an annual salary of $87,500. He replaces Chris Dennis, who will return to a teaching position.

Pappas told the board he and his wife, Davia, hope to build a home in the Waynesboro area.

“We’re excited. ... It’s very positive,” he said.

Pappas has been an assistant principal in the West Shore School District since 2008. He said he saw the Waynesboro opening on the Pennsylvania School Boards Association website, and a teacher he knows is a Waynesboro native who told him more about the area.

Pappas, who has two young children, said he looks forward to working in a small town and meeting people involved with the school.

“The big goal is I want to create relationships that are meaningful,” he said.

Pappas received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from York College of Pennsylvania. His résumé indicates he is a doctoral candidate at Liberty University.

The school board also hired a new band director to replace Patrick McNamee, who is retiring. Rhode Island resident Christopher J. Ritter will step into that role, and his wife, Kristi, will be the new librarian for the district’s middle and high schools.

The school board received 65 applications for the band director position, Assistant Superintendent Wendy Royer said.

Of 24 personnel openings that needed to be filled for the 2013-14 academic year, only three remain, Royer said. Those are in high school English, high school social studies and middle school social studies, she said.

The school board eliminated three technology facilitator positions.
