Being the coach’s kid only counts for so much in a sport like track and field, where results usually supersede any kind of favoritism.

While South Hagerstown coach Dwayne Freeman said his daughter, Hayley Freeman, never received any special treatment, he couldn’t help but recognize that her work ethic indeed was special — as were her results.

At the Maryland state championships — her final high school meet — on Memorial Day weekend in Baltimore, the senior won a Class 3A gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay, silver medals in both the 300 hurdles and 4x200 relay and she placed fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Hayley Freeman is The Herald-Mail’s 2013 Washington County Girls Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

While her father has plenty of positive things to say about her, he’s not the boastful type.

“It’s kind of difficult with her being my daughter. I don’t like to talk up myself, and it’s kind of difficult to talk up your own kids,” Dwayne Freeman said. “But Hayley has worked really hard. She goes out every day and tries to get better. She goes out there and knocks out workouts and then says, ‘OK, what else do you got for me?’

“All the positives that have come for her have come from her hard work. Nothing was given to her. The times speak for themselves. I’m just proud of her, as a coach and father.”

Hayley, who will continue her track career at the Virginia Military Institute, said she finished her high school career with “no regrets.”

“My senior year, I’m pretty satisfied with it,” she said. “Some of the things I accomplished, I didn’t think I’d do, like at the county meet. ... Counties I’ll remember for a long time.”

At the Washington County championships on May 9 at Boonsboro, Hayley competed in four individual events. She won three of them (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 400 dash) and placed second in the other (100 dash) to finish with a meet-high 38 points for the Rebels, who finished a close second to powerhouse Boonsboro in the team standings.

Hayley also helped lead South to a second-place finish at the Maryland Class 3A West region meet, as well as to team titles at South’s Rebel Relays and North Hagerstown’s Zonis Invitational this spring. At states, where the top eight teams were separated by less than 20 points, the Rebels finished seventh.

“The girls team, I’m just so proud of us,” Hayley said. “I’m sure a lot of people didn’t think we’d do what we did. I think we surprised a lot of people.”

Hayley finished with school records in the 100 hurdles (14.96 seconds), 300 hurdles (44.08) and 400 hurdles (1:06.56) and contributed to school records in the 4x100 (48.67) and 4x200 (1:43.16) — all achieved this spring.

“Once she moves on and goes to VMI, I’ll finally have time to reflect on her track career at South High,” Dwayne said. “She probably has had one of the top three careers in South track history. She has five records and scored a lot of points for us.

“Hayley has always been hungry and ambitious,” he added. “She has plans. She wants to be successful and will do whatever it takes to get there — the right way. She’ll put in the blood, sweat and tears to achieve her goals. She might not be the fastest kid out there or have the most ability, but I’ll put her work ethic up against anybody’s. She never backs down.

“I like to think that’s because of who she is and not because she’s the coach’s daughter.”
