Robert (Bob) David Bender, 78, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Born Thursday, April 4, 1935, in Lilly, Pa., he was the son of the late Norman Francis Bender and the late Madeline (Davis) Bender.

He graduated from Lilly High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Bob was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church. He belonged to the Local 171 Retirees, Mack Golden Bulldogs, Tri-State Catholic League, AMVETS Post 10, and American Legion Post 211, Funkstown, Md.

He retired from Mack Trucks after 29 years. He enjoyed bowling at Turner's Dual Lanes on the Wacky Rollers, playing softball on the senior league, volunteering at the Red Cross and spending time with his dog, Ginger.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Clinemyer) Bender; sons, David Bender of Hagerstown and Mike Bender and wife, Vicki, of Williamsport, Md.; daughters, Karen Ecker and husband, Chuck, of Hagerstown, Cathy Jackson and husband, Lynn, of Hagerstown, and Mary Palmer of Williamsport; brother, Jerry Bender and wife, Cheryl, of Lilly; sister-in-law, Barbara Bender of Greencastle, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brother, William (Bill) Bender; sister, Elizabeth Ann Maloney; and granddaughter, Christine Ecker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, June 10, 2013, at 1 p.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Greg Ferri officiating.

Family will receive friends Sunday, June 9, 2013, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742; or to the American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
