Greencastle wins state softball opener

PREP SOFTBALL

CARLISLE, Pa. — Elizabeth Ward had five strikeouts and only allowed five hits while issuing two walks to lead Greencastle-Antrim to a 3-1 victory over Chichester in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA state tournament at Carlisle High School on Monday.

Greencastle scored all three runs in the third. Hailey Regal started the inning off with a single and Mary Ward followed with a double. Regal and Ward came home on Whitley Mongan’s fly ball to left field that was dropped. Mongan later scored on Casey German’s single.

The Blue Devils play Ambridge on Thursday.

LEGION BASEBALL

Winchester 7, Funkstown 6

WINCHESTER, Va. — Winchester Post 21 scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Funkstown Post 211.

Winchester broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth on Jacob Rudolph’s three-run home run. Funkstown (2-1) tied the game with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Brandon Toloso and Zach Lucas each had two hits for Funkstown.
