Rental fee for lockers at Boonsboro Middle School questioned

June 02, 2013

A Hagerstown resident wanted to know why Boonsboro Middle School students have to pay a rental fee for their lockers, including gym lockers.

Washington County Public Schools spokesman Richard Wright said some schools charge a rental fee for a lock students can use on their lockers.

Generally, many schools with lockers charge $1 per lock, Wright said.

Boonsboro Middle charged $1 a year per lock to use for a book or athletic locker, he said. Northern Middle School charged students $1 for a lock for their athletic lockers, with the fee covering students’ time at the school from sixth through eighth grades, he said.

Some schools have lockers with built-in locks so a separate lock isn’t needed, Wright said.

Some of the things schools use the lock rental fee money for are buying new locks or instructional supplies, Wright said.
