May 24, 2013

BALTIMORE — Washington County athletes earned a pair of Class 3A silver medals Friday at the Maryland State Track & Field Championships at Morgan State University.

North Hagerstown’s Reggie Moody placed second in the boys long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches, and South Hagerstown’s Elizsha Streeter, Paige Flemings, Kiona Mency and Hayley Freeman finished second to Milford Mill in the girls 4x200-meter relay — although the results of all of Friday’s 4x200 relays will not be made official until Saturday, for reasons uknown to The Herald-Mail on Friday night.

South coach Dwayne Freeman said he clocked his girls at “1:43-something.” The Rebels were the top seed, based on region results, at 1:43.16, while Milford Mill came in fifth at 1:43.98.

“Going into the meet there were five teams that ran in the 1:43’s at regionals, and we knew it was going to be a shootout. And it was,” Dwayne Freeman said. “We ran a good race. Our handoffs could have been better. They needed to be better to win that kind of race. The kids are a little upset because they wanted to win and bring the gold home. But they gave a good effort to get second. I’m happy.”

The South girls also are seeded first in the 4x100 relay Saturday.

“They’ll have one more shot,” the coach said. “Hopefully they’ll bounce back.”

South also had a pair of top-eight placewinners in the boys shot put. Dan Stokes placed fourth with a throw of 49 feet, 6 inches, while Andrew Volz was sixth at 48-10.
