Mail Call - May 20

May 19, 2013

“I don’t understand how the judicial system works, when someone is arrested for drunken driving and kills a female passenger that was in the car, and gets six months probation — and then someone gets 14 months in jail for robbery. Neither of those things are right, it’s just horrible. It was not an accident. You got in the car, drunken driving, killed someone, and you get a slap on the hand. Six months probation?”
— Hagerstown

“Dr. Wilcox, superintendent of Washington County schools, must feel somewhat betrayed by news in Sunday’s jobs report for the county. He conscientiously cut a number of central office employees and doubled the work of others to keep from affecting classroom teacher numbers last year. He did all of this in light of knowing that the county budgets would be challenged by the continuing recession. The news yesterday shows that the county and the community college both added jobs. Of course, the college needed to staff all those new departments. Maybe Dr. Wilcox should teach Economics 101 to the county administrator and the commissioners.”
— Maugansville

“Can someone explain to me why we spend $60,000 a year for a zoning supervisor, to supervise one person, we pay him $30,000 a year, and we still have all these illegally posted signs in the right of way; yard sales and ‘Lower your bills,’ and all that. Why are we paying all that money and nothing’s done?”
— Williamsport

“Nice article in The Herald-Mail on May 9 about the pay, and the increase in wages and health care. That’s the first time, on page 2, we’ve ever noticed, $13,500 per teacher? Does that mean also the retirees? And also, is that all the employees, $13,500? What do they pay, and what kind of benefit is this? This is crazy. Are we kidding?”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling regarding the teachers wanting an increase in their pay. I’m hoping that the BOE will consider looking at what the substitute teachers are actually paid. We are paid pennies below what teachers get. A dollar raise or something would be nice. We go into these classrooms and the teachers want us to do everything that they usually would teach in a day, plus some ... So please, BOE, look at what the substitutes are getting. We provide a wonderful service, and we enjoy working with the kids, and we do an excellent job.”
— Hagerstown

“The Wall Street brokers and big banks borrow trillions from the fed (taxpayer money) at zero percent. You and me then borrow from those banks, at 4 to 7 percent for mortgages, or more on credit cards. That tells you right there who runs this country, and that America is corrupt. Then you factor in that congressmen can invest on Wall Street with inside information that the public cannot. Welcome to America, a country full of cowards who will not stand up to the government.”
— Hagerstown

“After a shooting, the liberals want to implement strict gun control or even gun confiscation (just ask Dianne Feinstein). It would be worth it to save just one child. However, they also support infanticide, using my tax dollars, which I strongly object to, by Planned Parenthood. Some of those babies are born alive and then murdered. Others capable of life are murdered before they are born. Is this not hypocrisy at its worst?”
— Rohrersville

“I’m calling in regard to an item to be put in Mail Call for a scam of phone calls about Medicare and they are asking for your information. They are a fraud. Please be aware.”
