HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — A Hedgesville man was found dead Saturday morning next to a car that West Virginia State Police determined went off the road and collided with a tree, according to a news release from state police.

Police identified the man as Donovan Travis, 27.

State police were notified of a traffic accident with a possible fatality near the 4300 block of Allensville Road at approximately 7:14 a.m. Saturday, the release said.

Police found a 2007 Toyota Corolla off the east edge of the road and saw a deceased man lying on the ground near the car’s passenger door, the release said.

Based on evidence at the scene, police determined the car was heading north on Allensville Road and went off the road, colliding with a tree, according to the release. An airbag deployed on the driver’s side of the car, which had “extreme vehicle compartment intrusion,” the release said.

Berkeley County Medical Examiner Curtis Keller confirmed the time of death as 7:15 a.m. Saturday, the release said.

Police said there was no evidence at the scene indicating there were any passengers in the car or other vehicles involved in the crash.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

Allensville Road is northwest of Hedgesville and southwest of Fort Frederick State Park, which is across the Potomac River in Maryland.
