The Washington County Free Library will launch a free magazine subscription service Wednesday.

Zinio is a free online magazine service to which the library is subscribing for Washington County residents. Anyone with a library card can access the service free of charge.

“We are excited to be able to offer this new service to our customers,” said Bill Taylor, reference librarian at the library. “It gives the reader a selection of online magazines to chose from that can be read on a laptop, a desktop computer a tablet or even a smart-phone.”

There are 55 different publications from which to choose, ranging from Bloomberg Business week, PC magazines, and food publications to celebrity gossip magazines such as US.

“The Zinio interface is very well designed with a table of contents, allowing the reader to maximize their reading experience,” Taylor said. “There are also several publications that offer interactive content such as videos, animations and audio. Each month, as with many magazine subscriptions, there is a new issue available immediately to the reader.”

In addition to using the Washington County Free Library website, an app is available that allows readers to download the magazine while they have Internet connections and read the content offline later.

“The apps are easy to install and they are clever in the fact that they adjust the size of the page depending on the viewing device. As e-readers and tablets become smaller, the technology improves,” Taylor said.

“Magazine subscriptions can be costly so this is a great way to read your favorite magazines, with no cost attached. For those who want to try a magazine that they may not try if they had to pay full price for it, with Zinio they can now try it free of charge ” he said.

The service is not really designed for research but more for readers to see the latest magazines, according to Taylor.

Zinio is the world’s largest newsstand and bookstore consisting of many digital products and services. Zinio, with headquarters in San Francisco, was founded in 2001.

The library has an extensive selection of magazines free to any reader with a Washington County library card, there are also thousands of publications available to purchase.

“There are thousands of publications available on Zinio that the reader can also purchase. At this time we are offering a wide selection of magazines from different genres,” Taylor said.
