Mail Call - April 29

April 28, 2013

“Interesting story about the city and the utilities, the water and sewer. I cannot believe they let 402 people go without paying and then finally they levied down on them, and 218 paid up. That is irresponsible for anybody that can’t pay a water and sewer bill, either on a quarterly or monthly basis. It’s very cheap. Start taking a firm line approach, city, and how about the county? What does the county, how much are they behind in the county? Cut them off.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling to, just to answer Grandma, about the underwear showing from the young men. Well, I don’t think they’re hurting anybody. Now, I’m 60 years old, and I remember when I was young, I bought some bell-bottom pants, and my parents went nuts over the bell-bottom pants. But I can also tell you another thing. When my father was young, he bought a zoot suit, and I don’t think my grandparents were real happy about that ... Part of the reason they do it is just to be a little bit of a rebel, that’s it.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“I used to work downtown. I’m very, very sorry to see Vinnie DiCola close his pizza shop. When I did work downtown, he was the kindest, nicest person of any of the shop owners. I’m sorry to see him go.”
— Hagerstown

“I was wondering how the politicians in Annapolis feel, for dragging their feet all these years on gaming tables and slots and casinos. Now here little Charles Town, W.Va., has got a race Saturday night in the 12th race, a million-and-a-half-dollar purse, a half a million more than the Preakness. Shame on these politicians.”
— Williamsport

“You don’t pass a bill favored by 93 percent of Americans? Really? Are you kidding me? Today, I am ashamed to be a Republican.”
— Berkeley County, W.Va.

“Congratulations to senators Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Toomey (R-Pa.) for attempting to create reasonable background checks for gun purchasers. It is a shame a level-headed compromise was killed on a 54-46 vote. Someday majority rule will return to the U.S. Senate.”
— Hagerstown

“Yes, Abe Lincoln has become popular with moviemakers. Lincoln was a Republican, against slavery. Southern Democrats wanted slavery. ... Civil Rights Bill of 1964 wouldn’t have passed had it not been for Republicans. Lester Maddox (D-Ga.) didn’t want blacks to vote. George Wallace (D-Ala.) tried to forbid black children from attending white schools. Eisenhower, Nixon (R) passed civil rights laws.”
— Sharpsburg

“Hagerstown caller, handguns are for protection of one’s home and loved ones. All handgun owners aren’t egotistical. Killers use knives, but knives can also be used as a means of defense if someone breaks into your home and tried to take your life. So, are knives going to be outlawed? What about rat poison? I guess if one owns a hunting gun, he isn’t egotistical.”
— Funkstown

“Gabby Giffords is angry about the gun- control vote, and so am I. I hope the citizens who support additional gun control are angry, and vote to replace the Republican senators who are under the control of the NRA. After the support of a very conservative Republican for background checks, this is the most unbelievable ‘in-your-face’ attitude by politicians I have ever seen. The NRA can be defeated, but it will take a mass vote by people who don’t seem to care enough to vote.”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I’m calling about my granddaughter, just, this is her first year at Marshall Street School, and prime example for bullies. She can’t, her parent, my son dropped her out of school and is now home schooling her because of a bully in school that’s terrorizing her, and she can’t even enjoy a school, being around other kids. You know, bullying is just not going to stop, and I think it’s a shame that my granddaughter had to drop out of school and be home-schooled because of a bully.”

“Remember when the president of the U.S. was running in ’08? On Sept. 6, he made a speech that he would not touch Social Security, the cost-of-living adjustment, and he said again, ‘Let me be clear.’ I think when he says let me be clear, you better watch out what he’s clear about because guess what his budget just did, it’s going to affect the cost-of-living raises to the ones who are retired. ... So let me be clear. I know he’ll blame it on the Republicans.”
— Boonsboro

“I’ll hold off rocking the boat until after the next election. Then I’ll decide whether to do my job or not. Does this sound familiar?”
— Hagerstown
