Monday breakdown: Missing tax refunds can be tracked

April 28, 2013

Have you filed your tax returns and not received your refunds in a timely manner? Still wondering when your refunds will arrive?

Peggy Riley, spokeswoman for the Internal Revenue Service, said a resource is available on the IRS website to easily check the status of your federal refund and find out when it is scheduled to arrive.

After logging on to www.irs.gov, users can click on a link toward the right of the page that reads: “Where’s My Refund?”

There, tax filers need to input their Social Security number, filing status (i.e. single, married, etc.) and the exact amount of their anticipated refund for security purposes, Riley said.

She said the website will show if a federal return has been received, and the estimated date of delivery or deposit of a refund.

“We’ve gotten most refunds out within 21 days, unless there’s an issue with the return. Then it could be a little bit longer,” Riley said.

The same information can be acquired by using an automated phone service at 1-800-829-4477, she said.

“We ask people to check once a day because it’s updated overnight,” Riley said.

For checking the status of Maryland state returns, a similar process is available.

Users can log on to the Comptroller of Maryland website at www.marylandtaxes.com, and click the the link that reads “Online” next to “Refund Status” under the heading 2012 Tax Information.

Users need to input their Social Security numbers and expected refund amounts to find out the status of their returns and potential refunds.

Those who filed their taxes with paper forms should expect about 30 days for processing due to budget constraints and staff reductions, according to the comptroller’s website.

The same information can be found by calling the comptroller’s office at 410-260-7701.
