Hagerstown man struck by freight train, flown to Shock Trauma Center

April 27, 2013

A Hagerstown man was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after being struck by a freight train Saturday morning, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Jimmy E. Lewis, 30, address unavailable, had internal injuries in the incident, which happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. on the CSX track in the area of Hopewell Road and Interstate 81, Deputy 1st Class Bryan Teets said.

“They said he was just lying across the tracks,” Teets said of what he was told by members of the train’s crew. “When they saw him, they hit the brakes.”

Instead of being run over by the train, Lewis was pushed along the tracks about 100 feet, Teets said. Lewis did not lose any limbs in the accident, Teets said.

Lewis was in stable condition Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

CSX police also were called to the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
