William Allen "Joe" Penner, 96, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born Jan. 22, 1917, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Paul Calvin and Hazel Irene (Poffenberger) Penner.

He was an employee of M.P. Moller Organ Co. in Hagerstown, retiring in 1985 after working 49 years. He continued as a consultant until 1992 with the closing of the company.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant with the Corps of Engineers. He was a past president of Southern Engineering Society in Hagerstown.

He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

Joe was interested in genealogy and was a member of several genealogy organizations.

He was a life member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, where he served in numerous capacities, including the church council, superintendent of the Sunday school and teacher of a young men's class.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Violet Agatha (Turner) Penner, whom he married Sept. 24, 1949; two sisters, Ruth Rebecca Fleagle of Frederick, Md., and Margaret Jane Brewbaker of Rockville, Md.; one brother, Nevin Clay Penner of Hagerstown; and godson, John A. Schaffer II of Hagerstown.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 29, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Linda M. Alessandri officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, with military honors being accorded by the Maryland State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
