Ruritan Scholarship winners announced

The Maugansville Ruritan Club announced its scholarship winners from local high schools.

Each winner attended a dinner at the club with their parents on April 17 and were presented $1,000 scholarships from Tom Ingram, scholarship chairman.

Allison Nicole Martin, daughter of Joseph and Sandra Martin, plans to attend Radford University and major in fashion design and business adminstration. 

John Britton III, son of John and Angela Britton and grandson of Cliff and Sue Britton, plans to attend Salisbury University and major in biology and pre-med, as well as play basketball. 

Kirstie Coombs, daughter of David and Cindy Coombs, plans to attend the University of Maryland majoring in engineering with a minor in biology.


Kyle Martin, son of Gregory and Kathleen Martin, plans to attend Grove City College and major in electrical engineering.

All four students are from North Hagerstown High. Martin also attends Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.

The club extends congratulations to this year’s winners. The club has presented scholarships to local students for the past 48 years.

Dinner meeting planned May 6

The Hagerstown Business and Professional Women’s Club will hold a dinner meeting Monday, May 6, at the Hager Hall Conference Center, 901 Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

Networking begins at 5:30 p.m, followed by dinner, the program and installation of the 2013-14 officers.

Fanny Crawford will present “Life Passages on the Autism Spectrum,” discussing adult autism symptoms and treatment. The dinner costs $16.

Mother-Daughter Banquet set for May 4

Maugansville Bible Brethren Church will hold a Mother-Daughter Banquet Saturday, May 4, at 6 p.m. at the church, 17904 Brinkley Ave. in Maugansville.

Lt. Clebe McClary’s wife of 46 years, Deanna McClary, will be the guest speaker.

Clebe McClary is a decorated veteran who was critically wounded in the Vietnam War. His story of courage, strength and determination, told by his wife, is an inspiring example of family values, love and commitment.

Tickets cost $8 for adults, $5 for those ages 7 to 12 and are free for those ages 6 and younger.

In addition, Clebe and Deanna will be guests at the Sunday, May 5, service at 10 a.m. A free will offering will be collected.

Display May Day baskets on Sunday, May 5

The Maugansville Historical Society invites Maugansville area residents to put a May basket of flowers on their lamp posts, porches, stoops or front door area Sunday, May 5, in celebration of May Day. 

The tradition, which is observed the first Sunday in May, has been going on in Maugansville for many years.

Wine and cheese tasting set at Women’s Club

The Hagerstown Women’s Club invites the public to a wine and cheese tasting at the club at 31 S. Prospect St. in Hagerstown.

The date is Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m.

Tickets cost $10 per person.

Wine from Red Heifer Winery in Smithsburg, and cheese and sorbet from Misty Meadow Farm Creamery LLC. in Ringgold will be available.

There will also be a silent auction of items, and appetizers and desserts made by club members.

Ruritan plans yard sale

The Maugansville Ruritan Club will hold its annual yard sale Saturday, May 11, from 6:30 am to 1 p.m. at its community building on Maugans Avenue.

Line dance is Saturday

The Country Western Dance Association will hold a line dance for singles and couples Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the former Quincy School gym, 7888 Anthony Highway in Waynesboro, Pa.

Fitness classes

Spring/summer fitness classes will be held weekly by the Washington County Recreation Department starting the week of May 6, from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and will run for three months. Classes will be held at Maugansville Elementary School on Maugans Avenue.

Tuesdays will be “Step Up Your Cardio” (May 7 to Aug. 6); Wednesdays, “Muscles at Work” (May 8 to Aug. 7); and Thursdays, “Step Fusion” (May 9 to Aug. 8). 

The cost varies according to resident/nonresident/senior ages 55 and older.
