April 26, 2013

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Blue Ridge Community and Technical College student was among 50 community college students across the nation, Canada and Micronesia to be named 2013 New Century Scholars, the college announced Friday.

Judy Jeffares was the only student from West Virginia to receive the honor from the program, which is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges, the college said in a news release.

“We are proud to have Judy Jeffares selected as a New Century Scholar. She is an excellent example of the adult learner,” Blue Ridge Community and Technical College President Peter Checkovich said in an emailed statement.

The students received a total of $100,000 in scholarships, according to the announcement.

More than 1,800 students were nominated from more than 800 community colleges for the recognition, according to the college. New Century Scholars are the highest-scoring students in the United States, plus one student from Canada and one additional student chosen from among one of the remaining seven other countries where Phi Theta Kappa is represented internationally, according to the college.

Each scholar will receive a $2,000 scholarship and plaque, and be presented at the American Association of College Presidents (AACC) Convention in San Francisco, according to the college.
