Kiwanis Club marks 92 years of service

April 25, 2013

The Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown celebrated 92 years of service in the community at its annual Charter Night March 21 at Fountain Head Country Club.

Club members, friends, and Kiwanis Club District 9 representatives enjoyed an evening of fine dining and festivities.

Over its many years of service in the Washington County area, the club has supported nonprofit organizations in the community, focusing on projects that benefit the youth of Washington County.

Its annual Travelogue Series brings travel presentations to the community, while the club’s Rose Day fundraiser in October is a fall tradition.

For more than 40 years, the club has awarded scholarships to deserving high school seniors, and will do so again in May. The club has distributed scholarships to local students totaling $38,400 since 2000.

The club also hosts an annual Christmas party for area youths in need. The party has been a club tradition since 1962. In 2012, 11 area schools participated, with more than 60 students attending.  Children who might need assistance at Christmas are selected by their teachers to join the festivities. Each child receives a pair of shoes, a toy (provided by Toys for Tots), books and sweatshirt or sweater. Pizza is served, and children visit Santa to receive their gifts.

Since October 2012, one new member each month has joined the club, which has 60 members.

The club meets Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. at the Academy Theater Banquet and Conference Center, 58 E. Washington St., Hagerstown.
