Prep Softball: North puts ball in play to make South pay

HAGERSTOWN — To play softball, you have to put the softball in play.

It was the key to it all for North Hagerstown, as the Hubs took advantage of their opportunities in a 10-0 MVAL Antietam win over South Hagerstown that was stopped after six innings by the 10-run rule.

“Offensively, we hit the ball hard today,” North coach Amanda Fleming said. “We put it in play and we manufactured some runs off some smart baserunning. We got some stolen bases and that led to some runs.”

Khaliah Frost had three hits and scored twice, while Emily Getz finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Hubs. Danielle Wissinger and Laken Feeser added two hits for North.

North pitcher Lauren Harbaugh allowed two hits and struck out six in four scoreless innings to earn the win. Rachel Thomas allowed one hit in two shutout innings of relief to earn a save and added two hits and an RBI.

“Our pitchers did a nice job today,” Fleming said. “Rachel Thomas did a good job of coming in and getting the big outs for us. Our defense worked well behind our pitchers today.”

South coach Angie Jeffries is ready to take the Rebels (4-8, 3-6) back to the drawing board.

“We can’t win a ball game when we make too many errors,” Jeffries said. “We only had three hits. We have got to execute when we have runners on base. We put ourselves in a bad position. They found a way to capitalize on our mistakes. They hit the ball pretty good today.”

North (6-4, 6-2) took control with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Emily Folk led off with an infield single and stole second before Getz ripped a one-out RBI double to center. After Frost singled to left, Harbaugh followed with an RBI single to center.

Feeser scored the next two runs for the Hubs. She reached on a bunt single in the second, stole second and came home on a throwing error. She followed by drawing a walk in the fourth, before stealing second and scoring on Wissinger’s single to right.

The Hubs added two runs in the fifth when Frost tripled to center and scored on Thomas’ single to center. Thomas stole second and scored on a couple of throwing errors.

The Hubs closed out the game with four runs in the sixth.

Wissinger led off with a double to center, stole third and came home on a single to right by Getz.

After Frost and Thomas each singled to load the bases, Getz and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. One out later, Morgan Froebe closed out the game with an RBI single to center, which also produced the 10th run with an error on the play.
