Prep Baseball: Devils bounce back, bet James Buchanan

GREENCASTLE, Pa. — One game after being held hitless by Waynesboro’s Dylan Bryan, Greencastle-Antrim rebounded in spectacular fashion, collecting 12 runs on eight hits en route to a decisive 12–1 victory over James Buchanan on Tuesday afternoon.

“There’s a certain style of pitcher that we have been struggling against,” Greencastle head coach Eric Shaner said. “We wanted to look for their pitch early in the count and not get cheated late in the count.”

That mindset worked for Shaner and the Blue Devils as Greencastle worked six walks against the Rockets’ pitching staff throughout the game, including four from starting pitcher Sloane Bendell.

Ryan Ricci, who performed well in Thursday’s loss to Waynesboro, kept it going on Tuesday as he allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out four and walking two.

“To string hits against him is tough to do,” Shaner said. “When Ricci is pitching, we want the opposing team to earn their bases.”

The Rockets were able to drum up a run in the third inning when Levi Deike ripped an RBI liner past a diving Hunter Szaflarski to tie the game at 1. The cheers from James Buchanan fans were silenced after that as the game unraveled for the Rockets in the third.

Bendell issued two walks to Cam Chilcote and Danny Stepler to start the inning. Chilcote and Stepler stole bases to land in scoring position and Kurt Hansen blooped a shallow single over a drawn-in infield to score the two Blue Devils and give them a 3–0 lead.

“You can’t beat a good team like they are when you give them that many free bases,” James Buchanan head coach Scott Folmar said.

After a Jake Crist liner scored Hansen, Bendell issued his third walk of the inning to Adam Moore. Seeing enough from his starter, Folmar called on Derek Embly in relief.

Embly’s day netted the same results. With runners at second and third, Thomas Bowers laced a two-run double down the left-field line for a 7-1 lead.

Justin Hovey followed with a bouncing ball that hopped over the shortstop’s head to score Bowers. Chilcote added an RBI on a single to left field before James Buchanan made another pitching change, bringing in Josiah Utermolen to quell the rally. Utermolen was effective as he forced Hansen to pop out to left field to end the inning.

The Blue Devils took advantage of three walks and three errors by the Rockets to key the eight-run inning.

“We can’t walk guys,” Folmar said. “We walked too many guys, kicked a couple of balls around and they were hitting the ball well today.”

Justin Hovey went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including a two-run ground-rule double in the fifth inning.
