Lucille Buxton Messinger, 84, formerly of Bridgeport, Conn., died peacefully Monday, April 22, 2013, at her Smithsburg, Md., home surrounded by family.

Born July 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret Buxton. The late Harry Buxton and Celia Dobson were her siblings.

Lucille attended Bassick High School in Connecticut and obtained a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in library science.

She worked as a secretary at Hagerstown Junior College and later at Woodland Way School as a teacher. She worked many years at Smithsburg Elementary School as a librarian until retirement. She later spent many hours donating her time to animal causes and to the animals she loved so much at the Washington County SPCA.

Lucille is survived by her husband of 65 years, Richard Messinger; daughters, Sally Clopper and husband, Ben, Chris Corpening and husband, Griff, and Rebecca Willms and husband, Tommy; son, Fred Messinger; granddaughter, Audrey Messinger; grandsons, Aaron Clopper and wife, Julie, Joe Clopper, Reid Messinger and Jack Corpening; and great-grandson, Charles Clopper.

The family wishes to extend a thank you to Dr. Hurwitz, to Hospice of Washington County and to all her dear friends and neighbors who have meant so much to her and her family.

A private memorial will be held at the discretion of the family.
