A public information meeting will be held tonight to provide information about the planned “West City” elementary school to community members of the Hager’s Crossing housing development, Washington County Public Schools officials said Tuesday.

The school is to be built in the development behind Walmart in Hagerstown’s West End.

The 7 p.m. meeting will be held in the Hager’s Crossing community center.

City of Hagerstown officials asked for the informational meeting to be held before the county submits an application for a Planned Unit Development amendment, said Chad Criswell, a senior project manager and planning supervisor for the school system.

Before the county bought the land for the new elementary school, 240 apartments had been proposed for the site, school system facilities officials said.

The site selection study for the school states the property is zoned R2, or residential, with a Planned Unit Development (PUD) overlay for mixed-density residential. For the school to be built there, a PUD amendment is needed, the study states. That process involves Hagerstown Planning Commission review and, eventually, City Council approval.

A City of Hagerstown planner served on the site selection committee for the new school, the study states.
Washington County officials, school system officials and the design team are expected to be at the community meeting.

The meeting will include information about how the school will fit on the property, but the school system does not have a final design, school system officials said.

The meeting will not be about redistricting, Deputy Schools Superintendent Boyd Michael said.

A volunteer committee has been charged with coming up with recommendations for a broad redistricting for the opening of the West City school.
