Martinsburg woman killed when car crashes into tractor-trailer on I-81

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Martinsburg woman died Tuesday morning when the vehicle she was driving struck the rear of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Barbara J. Haarman, age and address not given, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3 a.m. accident, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. She  sustained multiple injuries, including head trauma, the release said.

Haarman was driving a 2000 Ford station wagon north when it struck the rear of the tractor-trailer driven by David Bernhardt of Fayetteville, Pa., deputies said. Bernhardt told deputies he felt his truck lurch forward and saw a vehicle veer into the median from his sideview mirror, the release said.

Police said the accident occurred about two miles south of exit 12, the exchange for W.Va. 9 east and W.Va. 45.

Evidence at the scene indicated Haarman’s vehicle was traveling faster than the posted speed limit, the release said.
