WILLIAMSPORT — The Williamsport baseball team did all of the necessary little things to pull out a 5-3 win over the Tuscarora Titans on Wednesday.

“We didn’t swing the bats great,” Wildcats coach Dave Warrenfeltz said. “But we had some good at-bats to get baserunners and to move them around. I also thought that we really played well defensively.”

Warrenfeltz said his pitching staff held its own.

“I thought we pitched really well,” Warrenfeltz added. “Today was Ryan Boward’s first start since his injury. It was good to see him have good life on the ball. Blake Harne did a good job of coming in. He didn’t have his best stuff, but he battled. He gave us 3 2/3 big innings. Then Nick Sauble came in and slammed the door for us.”

Harne hurled 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to get the win for Williamsport. Sauble entered in the seventh and added one scoreless inning of relief to pick up the save.

Tuscarora (2-8) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when courtesy runner Chris Fetting scored on an RBI groundout by Brandon Lavern.

Williamsport (7-4) scored three runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead 3-1. With two outs, Geraghty Showe reached on an infield error and scored on a triple to left by Colby Byers, who then came home on a wild pitch. Chase Blickenstaff, Tyler Martin and Brandon Toloso then drew consecutive walks to load the bases, and Blickenstaff came home on a wild pitch.

“In high school baseball, any mistake can be costly,” Tuscarora coach Jason Smith said. “If you go that way, one inning hurt us overall. That ground ball should have been the third out. They scored three runs after that. You have got to execute. We have got a young ballclub. We are learning and we are going to continue to work hard.”

The Titans got two runs in the top of the third to even the score at 3-3. Nick Winpigler drew a leadoff walk. One out later, Matt Clemons and Chris Masser each singled to left to load the bases. Winpigler scored when Bailey McAuliffe reached on an infield single. Clemons came home on a wild pitch.

The Wildcats responded with a run in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good at 4-3. Riley Arnone led off with the first of his two doubles to center and Jordan Buchanan followed with a walk. One out later, Showe singled to left to knock in Arnone.

The Wildcats got their last run in the bottom of the sixth when pinch-runner Jack Kelly scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Toloso.

“Williamsport has a good team,” Smith said. “They play solid defense and they have got guys that can throw strikes. They are a good fastball-hitting team, and they are able to take advantage of their opportunities.”
