Pa. American Cancer Society volunteers thanked

To the editor:

This year the American Cancer Society celebrates its 100th birthday. On behalf of our patients, families and communities, your American Cancer Society would like to take this opportunity to thank our valuable volunteers who support us in our mission to Finish the Fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service. Our volunteers are a vital component at every level in helping us to accomplish this mission.

Volunteers give of their time and resources in countless ways to help further our mission. Trained cosmetologists might help with our Look Good Feel Better program or offer to house a wig boutique in their salon. Other volunteers might become drivers for our Road to Recovery program helping transport patients to cancer treatments. Trained breast cancer survivors are vital to our Reach to Recovery program providing services to those newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Volunteers are also an extremely important part of fundraising events such as Daffodil Days, Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. These events create special community bonds and generate necessary funding for the fight against cancer.

Regional Health Initiatives Director Lenore Wyant and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of our volunteers as we work to finish the fight!

Longtime Boonsboro coach shows his appreciation

To the editor:

Saturday, April 6, 2013, was a special day for me. The field and track where I started the Boonsboro High School football and track and field programs in 1959-60 were dedicated in my honor. I have many people to thank, ranging from the administration that hired me, on through to the members of the last team that I helped coach, in 2011; with a special thanks to the student body at Boonsboro High School in 2011-12, who gave the more than 75 percent approval required from the current students, by the Washington County Public Schools naming policy.

I need your help with this large task of thanking everyone, having been a Boonsboro High School teacher for 37 years, the head coach for football from 1959 to 1976; cross country coach from 1977-1995; and track and field 1960-1996. I was also the athletic director from 1978-1996; and volunteer assistant coach for track and field from 1997-2011.

Teacher and coach are synonymous terms. Thank you all Boonsboro Warriors past and present for giving me the chance to help you grow in some way.
