Board clears Hagerstown nightclub in St. Patrick's Day fight

April 17, 2013

Washington County liquor officials have ruled that a Hagerstown nightclub was not at fault for a fight that occurred outside the business on St. Patrick’s Day.

During a Wednesday hearing, the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County voted 3-0 to exonerate AVA Lounge at 28 S. Potomac St. of any wrongdoing.

Hagerstown Police Officer Kevin Brashears said the incident was reported in the early morning hours of March 17, when two men got into a fight outside the lounge.

AVA owner Jennie Deming told the liquor board that the people involved in the disturbance were in the lounge earlier that night and didn’t cause any problems.

“We’ve known these customers to come in before,” she said.

Deming said the people who caused the problem have been banned from the lounge.

She said the business was trying to “alter its crowd” by changing the type entertainment and attracting an “older” clientele.
