Paul “PL” Smith, 94, of Mercersburg, Pa., formerly of Williamsport, Md., passed away with his wife by his side on Saturday, April 13, 2013. He was born in Hagerstown, Nov. 6, 1918, to the late James and Gertrude Smith. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur Smith of Clearwater, Fla., Lester Smith of Hagerstown, Md., Bernard Smith of Chicago, Ill.; and sisters, Geraldine Munday of Clearwater, and Agnes (Smith).

After serving in the Maryland National Guard he re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the onset of WWII serving with the Seabees in the South Pacific. Following the war, he remained in the Naval Reserves until 1952.

An avid water sports enthusiast he spent most of his free time boating and skiing the Big Slack Water section of the Potomac River. He was employed by Fairchild Hiller Aircraft Co. in Hagerstown for 45 years, retiring in 1985.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Smith of 51 years of Mercersburg; son, Gary Smith and wife, Dixie, of Williamsport; son, Brian Smith and wife, Tamra, of Mercersburg; and six grandchildren, Shannon Hose and family of Martinsburg, W.Va.; Holly McKenrick and family of Hagerstown, Paul “Alex” Smith, Kaylee Smith, Micah Smith and Clayton Smith of Mercersburg.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 17, at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Emmanuel Baptist Temple in Hagerstown for family and friends.
