Hamburg golf tourney to help fund scholarship

April 15, 2013|Kristy Smith | Around Boonsboro

The Franklin E. “Wimp” Hamburg Scholarship was established by his children Christi (Hamburg) Weaver, Patti (Hamburg) Grimes and Dean Hamburg in the spring of 2000 following their father’s death.

Hamburg was a lifelong resident of Boonsboro and was active with the children and students who lived in the community.

He was a co-founder of South Mountain Little League, Junior Basketball League and the Junior Olympics. In addition, he also coached many teams in the Boonsboro community. He worked with the agriculture teachers at Boonsboro High School and helped instruct students on how to plant trees and flowers in Boonsboro and the surrounding areas.

As a memorial to their father’s legacy and to keep his memory alive, Christi Weaver and Dean Hamburg have been hosting the “Wimp” Hamburg Golf Scramble for the past 13 years.

The golf tournament will be held Friday, April 26. Annually, the money raised is used to award several college scholarships to Boonsboro High School seniors.

To date, the family has awarded more than $55,500 in scholarships.

If you are a graduating senior, pick up an application from the BHS office or the counseling center.

The deadline to apply is April 26.
