Historical society meeting

The Middleburg/Mason-Dixon Line Historical Society will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at the State Line Ruritan Building off Pa. 11 at State Line (Pa.) Community Park. 

The guest speaker will be Bob O’Connor, an author and historian from Charles Town, W.Va. His program, titled “A House Divided Against Itself,” is based on his book of the same title about the Culp brothers who fought in the Civil War. Originally from Gettysburg, Pa., the brothers fought against each other in different areas on the same battlefield, one for the 2nd Virginia Infantry, CSA, and the other for the 87th Pennsylvania, USA.  Both also spent time together in Chambersburg, Pa. 

The public is invited to the free event. Refreshments will be served.

Card party and luncheon

The public is invited to a benefit card party and luncheon at the Women’s Club, 31 S. Prospect St., Wednesday at noon. Tickets cost $12, which include lunch, as well as card and board games.  All proceeds benefit Girls Inc.

AAUW used book sale

The American Association of University Women, or AAUW, used book sale will begin Thursday and run through Saturday at the Arc of Washington County, 1000 Florida Ave.

The hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The sale offers an assortment of books in many categories.

An auction of special finds and old and rare books will be Thursday at 1 p.m. 

On Friday, local authors will display and sell their books. On Saturday, books will be available at half price, and from noon to closing, books will be available for $5 per bag.

Proceeds provide scholarships to community students seeking advanced degrees. Funds also are contributed to the local library to assist with its educational programs. AAUW is celebrating 50 years of book sales, as it began in 1963 to provide funds for the  library built on Potomac Street.

Health seminar

The Cearfoss Senior Connection will learn about healthy eating Tuesday at 10 a.m.

“Healthy Eating on a Budget” will be presented by student nurses. Free blood pressure screenings will be offered. The group meets at Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship, 14010 Greencastle Pike. The community is invited.
