HCC threatens late, but loses to Potomac State

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Potomac State 5, HCC 2

Tanner Everton struck out 10 over 8 1/3 innings, and Jamie Miller came on in the ninth with two runners on and struck out the final two hitters to give Potomac State (22-10) a victory over Hagerstown Community College on Sunday.

Garrett Sprankle drove in both runs for the Hawks (25-19) with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a single in the sixth.

Devin Schaeffer was the only player with two hits for HCC.



COLLEGE TRACK

HCC men finish second

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — The Hagerstown Community College men’s team finished second in the team standings Saturday at the Messiah Invitational at Messiah College.

Messiah won the men’s competition with 179 points. Hagerstown followed with 99 points and Frostburg State was third with 83.

Jerel Madison was second in the 200 meters (22.34), fourth in the 100 (11.09) and was part of the second-place 4x100 (43.54) and 4x400 (3:25.36) relay teams along with Chris Gardner, AJ El-Amin and Rodney Flora.

Gardner was third in the 200 and second in the 400, El-Amin was fourth in the 400 hurdles, Brandon Horning was second in the 1,500, and Kenton Grossnickle was second and Andy Drum third in the 10,000.

In men’s field events, Kenny Kopp was third in the high jump and fifth in the decathlon, David Homce was sixth in the decathlon and Grant Smith was second in the shot put, third in the discus and sixth in the hammer throw.

The HCC women finished in 10th place in the team standings. Aliyah Dean was second in the 100, Anastasia White was sixth in the 200 and seventh in the 100 hurdles, Rachel Lilley was third in the 10,000 and the 4x400 relay team of White, Dean, Kerri Gassior and Paige Goebelbecker finished fifth.



PREP SOFTBALL

Chambersburg 5, Carlisle 0

CARLISLE, Pa. — Alexis Shearer pitched a three-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts to lead the Trojans to a Mid-Penn Commonwealth win over Carlisle (1-7, 0-5) on Saturday.

Tara Harman tripled and doubled, and Miranda Pugh also had two hits for Chambersburg (6-1, 5-1).



GIRLS LACROSSE

Blair 9, Mercersburg 5

BLAIRSTOWN, N.J. — Gabby Cuzzola had three goals for Mercersburg Academy in a loss to Blair Academy.

Allyson Kinney had a goal and an assist, Sophia Garibaldi had a goal, Hanna Warfield had an assist and Megan Lafferty made 16 saves for the Blue Storm (3-3).
