Seventh is heaven for Suns in victory

April 14, 2013

HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Suns erased a 4-2 deficit with a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 6-4 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,083 fans at Municipal Stadium.

Pedro Severino got the seventh-inning rally started with a single to center off Shorebirds reliever Kevin Jacob (0-1). Severino took second on a wild pitch and stole third on ball four to Wes Schill. Tony Renda drove in Severino with a single to left, and Khayyan Norfork followed with a double to center, plating Schill with the tying run and Renda from first with the go-ahead run.

Estarlin Martinez capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to center off reliever Jose Nivar.

The rally made a winner of Suns reliever Bryan Harper (1-0), the younger brother of Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper, who played for Hagerstown in 2011.

Suns starter Pedro Encarnacion lasted just four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. But Travis Henke, Bryan Harper and Robert Benincasa — who got his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth — held Delmarva (6-5) to one run over the final five innings for Hagerstown (6-5).

The Shorebirds took a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI doubles by Wynston Sawyer and Creede Simpson.

The Suns tied it at 2 in the third on Renda’s RBI double and Norfork’s sacrifice fly.

Christian Walker led off the fourth with a home run to give Delmarva a 3-2 lead.

The Shorebirds made it 4-2 in the top of the seventh off Bryan Harper, as Gregory Lorenzo led off with a double went to third on Anthony Vega’s single and scored on Tucker Nathans’ sacrifice fly.
