Q: I haven’t heard anything yet this year about Small Business Month at either national, state or local levels. Are there any events planned?

A: According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, the signature National Small Business Week will be June 17 to 21. This year’s events will take place across the country and will feature exciting and informative events designed to help small businesses start, grow and succeed.

Locally, area residents are encouraged to participate in SCORE Hagerstown’s Small Business Community Awareness Program, principally during the months of April and May.

Scheduled events include:

Educational workshops at Hagerstown Community College. For those thinking of starting a business or needing a refresher, the “How to Really Start Your On Business” series will be presented on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. through April 25. Sessions will offer hands-on strategies for successful planning, financing, organizing, managing and marketing small businesses.

On three consecutive Thursdays, May 9 to 23, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at HCC, “Simple Steps to Grow Your Business” will be offered for existing business owners and operators. The workshops are focused on growth strategies for planning, marketing and managing small businesses, and participants will take part in hands-on exercises designed for immediate on-the-job application.

To register, call HCC at 240-500-2236 or go to www.scorehagerstown.org/calendar.html.

Listen to SCORE Hagerstown. On the first Tuesday of every month, join SCORE and moderator Lou Scally on the “SCORE Talks Small Business” program on WJEJ-1240 AM. May and June programs will feature local SCORE Client of the Year award winners, who will share their start-up and business-growing experiences.

Attend a SCORE roundtable. On May 16 and the third Thursdays of each odd month from noon to 1:30 p.m., SCORE Hagerstown sponsors a free small business roundtable and networking event focusing on a hot topic and featuring a speaker. Go to www.scorehagerstown.org for topics and location. Seating is limited; be sure to register.

Other events will be announced, so be sure to stay tuned. For information, to sign up for the monthly e-newsletter, and to register for free and confidential mentoring, go to the website or call SCORE at 301-766-2043.
