Book signing scheduled for motivational author

A book signing will be held Saturday for Dr. Sinclair Grey, motivational speaker, motivator, author and life coach.

Stop by the Memorial Recreation Center, 109 W. North Ave., and pick up your copy of his book, “It’s in You” from 1 to 3 p.m.

Fundraising dinners scheduled for weekend

On Saturday starting at noon, a chicken dinner fundraiser will be held at the Memorial Recreation Center, 109 W. North Avenue.

The cost is $7.50 for a menu of chicken, macaroni and cheese or potatoes, collard greens or green beans, roll and water.

Then on Sunday, enjoy an all-you-can-eat American Little League spaghetti feed. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for ages 4-12; and free for children 3 and under.


YMCA Achievers Banquet to be held Saturday

Hopefully, you have picked up your tickets for the annual Hagerstown YMCA Achievers Banquet and will be at the event Saturday at the Clarion Hotel, 901 Dual Highway.

The social hour will start at 6 p.m. followed by the program and dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Come out and hear this years’ 2013 Keynote speaker, Dr. Michael Markoe, Washington County associate superintendent for educational improvement and innovation, as he speaks on this year’s theme, “Be, Believe, Become.”

Share in the joy of the adult achievers who are being honored as positive role models in the community: Brenda Thiam, autism specialist for Washington Co. Board of Education; and Octavia Harris, director of human resources, Volvo Truck Operations. Teen achievers will also being recognized at the event.

Tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for ages 4-11.

Asbury church to hold indoor yard sale

Are you still looking for some hidden treasure, some  trinkets, or did you find some last month and want to pick up a few more items? Drop by Asbury United Methodist Church, 155 Jonathan St., on Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon for an indoor yard sale.

Check out the items that will be range in price from 50 cents to $5 (some might be slightly higher) on articles such as books, baby gear, clothes, VHS videos, household items, etc.

The proceeds will benefit vacation Bible school and youth activities.

Haven Lutheran to host Christian praise band

If you are a youth or a music enthusiast and looking for something to do this weekend, the Haven  Lutheran Church, 1035 Haven Rd., will host an acoustic evening featuring TJ Harris with special guests, Living Water, a Christian rock praise band from Frederick, on Saturday at 6 p.m.

TJ is the lead singer of the Grammy-nominated Christian rock band Decyfer Down. TJ is currently in the middle of his solo acoustic tour and has graciously accepted our invitation to come to Hagerstown. Help spread the word, invite your friends, come listen and see how TJ uses the medium of music to convey not only a positive message with his lyrics, but the Gospel as well!

Camp applications to be available Monday

Applications for summer campers (ages 6-12) will be available starting Monday at the Memorial Recreation Center, 109 W. North Ave.

Applications are still being accepted for summer camp counselors and/or lifeguards.

‘Writing Circle’ scheduled at recreation center

A “Story Telling Writing Circle” will be held at Memorial Recreation Center, 109 W. North Ave., on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The event will be facilitated by Mrs. Faith Crumbly and is designed to help you record your family’s place in history.

Zion Baptist to hold annual women’s tea

The Zion Baptist Church Women’s Day committee will host its annual Women’s Day Tea on Saturday, April 27.

The event will be at the Martin Luther King Center, beginning at 10 a.m. The 2013 theme is “Journey to Joy: Women Running to Obtain the Prize,” based on 1 Corinthians 9:24-27.

Diabetes support group to meet Wednesday

The Potomac towers Diabetes Support Group will meet Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the first-floor community room. 

The program will be “Diabetes Superfoods,” presented by Lisa McCoy, a registered dietician with the Washington County Health Department.

The group is open to individuals who live at Potomac Towers and anyone in the community.

This forum is to educate individuals with diabetes to help manage their disease and to gain support from others.

The group is sponsored by the Washington County Health Department, Hagerstown Housing Authority and the Washington County Commission on Aging.
