Doris (Doey) Burkholder Glessner, 73, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully at her home on April 10, 2013, after a brief but gallant battle with cancer.

Born July 7, 1939, she was the daughter of J. Marlin Burkholder and Marie Landis Burkholder.

Doris was a 1957 graduate of Greencastle (Pa.) High School and Waynesboro Business School. During her early years, she lived in Nashville, Tenn. She was an usher at the Grand Ole Opry, where she met several celebrities.

Her family moved to Hagerstown in 1972. Doris was a co-founder of Glessner Protective Services, Inc. (Glessner Alarm and Communications) in 1972, and she served 41 years as corporate secretary and treasurer. She also had a successful career in real estate with Coldwell Banker, Hopkins, R.E., of Hagerstown. She was a member of the Million Dollar Sales Club from 1986 to 1989.

Doris took pride in serving the community. She created and chaired "Reaching for the Moon," a breast cancer awareness fundraiser held at the Milestone Farm in Williamsport. During her nine years as chairperson, the event raised over $300,000 for BCACV. She served on the boards for Breast Cancer Awareness of Cumberland Valley, the John Marsh Cancer Endowment Committee, Children in Need and the Women's Club of Hagerstown. Besides her community involvement, she was an avid bridge player, a self-taught piano player, and she loved to travel. But her true passion was to live life to its fullest and spending time with her family and many friends.

Doris is survived by two sons, Stephen A. Glessner and his fiancee, Dr. Donna Tullner, of Frederick, Md., and Neal R. Glessner and wife, Mary, of Hagerstown. Her daughter, Paige Glessner Hershey, is still fondly remembered and fought a similar battle before passing away in 2000. Doris is also survived by husband, Robert L. Glessner of Chambersburg, Pa.; and by three sisters, Evelyn L. Crider of Nottingham, Pa., Beverly A. Hajek of Waynesboro, Pa., and Linda K. Shank of Chambersburg; and by six grandchildren, Amanda Glessner, Travis Glessner, Holden Hershey, Jordan Glessner, Brooke Glessner and Luke Glessner; and two great- grandchildren, Anthony Stroud and Mason Glessner.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John L. Burkholder.

The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., Hagerstown, MD 21740, on Sunday, April 14, 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown, on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook and the Rev. David Orevac will officiate. Burial will be private, at the family's convenience.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Breast Cancer Awareness of Cumberland Valley (BCACV), 322 E. Antietam St., Suite 101, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
