GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Elizabeth Ward was stellar again inside the circle for Greencastle-Antrim, firing a one-hit shutout as the Blue Devils blanked Gettysburg 13-0 in a Mid-Penn Colonial softball game.

Ward, getting more starts in place of the injured Kelsey Brewbaker, struck out six and walked three. She has been a pivotal component in the Blue Devils’ early-season success.

“She’s really stepped up for us with Kelsey down,” Greencastle head coach Mark DeCarli said. “She’s a huge part of the team now and hopefully she keeps improving and keeps getting stronger.”

As Ward dominated inside the circle, Greencastle’s bats were still sizzling from Monday’s 14-0 romp over Camp Hill.

Erin Bontrager’s two-run single and Ashlynn Schaeffer’s RBI single highlighted a four-run first inning for the Blue Devils (4-2, 2-1). Greencastle batted around in the inning — an event that became a regular occurrence in the game.

Gettysburg’s Madelyn Yannetti quieted Greencastle’s bats in the second, needing just three pitches to get three outs.

The speedy 1-2-3 inning did not sit well with DeCarli, prompting him to have a talk with the team in between innings.

“I told them to be patient up there,” DeCarli said. “They were going up there and just swinging away. We still had to be patient no matter what the score was.”

Patience paid off for the Blue Devils as they scorched Yannetti for nine runs in the third on eight hits — six of those runs coming before Gettysburg recorded an out. Whitley Mongan, Katie Gelsinger and Bontrager all had two-run doubles in the inning. Michaela Ensminger capped off the scoring with an RBI triple over the head of right fielder Carlee Funt.

Ward was solid the rest of the way, striking out four in the fourth and fifth innings to secure her fourth victory of the season.

Bontrager had two hits and four RBIs, while Mongan had two hits and drove in two.
