Suns make early lead stand up at Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Carlos Lopez went 3-for-4, Mike McQuillan hit his first home run of the season and the Hagerstown Suns defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 6-3 on Tuesday night.

The Suns jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and held on for their second straight win to improve to 3-3. The BlueClaws fell to 1-5.

Hagerstown went up 4-0 in the top of the first inning against Lakewood’s Jordan Guth (0-2).

Tony Renda reached on an error to start the game, and McQuillan followed with a home run to right field for a 2-0 Suns lead. One out later, Brandon Miller hit a double to left, and Lopez followed with an RBI single to left.

Lopez then went to third on  a single by J.R. Higley and scored on Craig Manuel’s groundout to first for a 4-0 lead.

The Suns added a run in the second to make it 5-0. Renda drew a one-out walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by McQuillan and scored as Estarlin Martinez reached on an error.

Hagerstown scored its final run in the third. Lopez led off with a double and, one out later, scored from second as Manuel reached on an error.

The BlueClaws, who committed five errors in the game, got a run back in the bottom of the third against Suns starter Dixon Anderson. They scored their final two runs in the seventh against David Fischer on a two-run, inside-the-park home run by Roman Quinn.

Anderson (1-0) went six innings, allowing four hits, a walk and the one run, while striking out five.

Fischer went the final three innings for his first save of the year, allowing three hits, a walk and the two runs, while striking out five.

Guth lasted five innings in the loss, allowing six runs (two earned), six hits and a walk while striking out three.

Higley finished with two of Hagerstown’s seven hits.

Chad Carman went 2-for-3 for Lakewood.
