Former Ravens kicker to speak at Boys & Girls Club dinner

April 08, 2013

The Boys and Girls Club of Washington County will have former NFL kicker Matt Stover as the keynote speaker at its 23rd annual Steak and Burger Dinner on Thursday, April 25, at the Hager Hall Conference and Event Center on Dual Highway.

Stover, who played for 20 seasons in the National Football League, is perhaps best known for his 13 seasons as a Baltimore Raven.

Stover was drafted by the New York Giants after graduating from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in marketing. He played for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts. In 2011, Stover was added to the Ring of Honor at M & T Stadium for his outstanding career as a Raven.

“There are some similarities between Matt’s career and the Boys & Girls Club,” said Jim Deaner, the club’s executive director. “I read while in Baltimore he only missed one extra point over a 13-year career. That kind of reliability and consistency is what we work to provide for our club members. We want our youth to know that the Boys & Girls Club is here for them.”

The club serves area youths between the ages of 6 and 18. The club operates seven after-school programs and five summer camps. More than 300 members participate in club programs on a daily basis.

The annual dinner helps raise resources necessary to provide programs that aim to improve academic success, develop good character and promote healthy lifestyles for local youth.

The annual event starts at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction. It includes entertainment from club members, and the opportunity to meet Stover and obtain an autograph. Tickets cost $50 per person and table sponsorships cost $500.
