Walker helps 'Birds walk off with win over Suns

April 07, 2013

SALISBURY, Md. — Christian Walker stroked an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to lead Delmarva to a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Hagerstown Suns.

The victory allowed the Shorebirds (3-1) to win the season-opening series over the Suns. Walker drove in both Delmarva runs in the win.

Delmarva pitching — led by Branden Kline, a Thomas Johnson graduate and the Baltimore Orioles’ No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft — held the Suns to three hits. Hagerstown’s only run came on Brandon Miller’s first home run in the seventh, a leadoff shot to center that tied the game at 1.

Kline pitched six innings, allowing two hits, while walking two and striking out three in the no decision.

The Shorebirds rallied against Suns reliever Travis Henke (0-1), who came on in the ninth.

Anthony Vega led off with a single to right and took second on Greg Lorenzo’s sacrifice bunt, before Walker followed one out later with his game-winning hit.

Delmarva took a 1-0 lead in the first off Suns starter Ronald Pena. Lorenzo drew a leadoff walk and stole second before Torsten Boss moved him to third with a grounder. Walker lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way until the seventh.

Pena pitched five innings, allowing the one run on three hits, while striking out two and walking one. Brian Dupra came on for three innings of two-hit relief before the ninth.

Juan Guzman (1-0) collected the win for Delmarva, despite allowing two walks in his one inning of work.

Miller had two hits for the Suns, while Estarlin Martinez had Hagerstown’s only other hit.
