Hagerstown firefighters responded to 25 1/2 W. Franklin St. at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday to a report of smoke in the building.

Hagerstown Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven said he expected tenants of a downtown Hagerstown apartment building would be able to return to their homes Sunday after a report of smoke in the building’s basement.

Hagerstown firefighters responded to 25 1/2 W. Franklin St. at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday for the incident.

No injuries were reported, officials said.

DeHaven said the smoke came from a basement mechanical room that contained a furnace, but he did not know Sunday afternoon whether the smoke came from the furnace.

The three-story brick apartment building is next door to Hagerstown Fire Department’s Pioneer, Hook & Ladder Co.

A couple walking down the street were among those who said they saw the smoke.

Diamond Washington, 19, of Hagerstown, said she and her boyfriend, Gary Gipe, 23, of Hagerstown, were walking along West Franklin Street when they saw smoke coming out of a basement window along the alley between the apartment building and the fire company.

Washington said there also was smoke coming from basement door panels that lie flush with the sidewalk.

Firefighters propped open those doors as smoke came out of the building.

Gipe said he went to the neighboring fire station, which had its bay doors closed, and rang the bell to notify firefighters of the smoke.
